ABSTRACT
1897 Born October 10, in the village Orda in Podolia, at the time an eastern province of the Russian-occupied sector of Poland. One of seven children in a well-to-do family belonging to the landed gentry, remains sickly and lame for life as the result of a bone disease of the leg and unsuccessful attempts at surgery. Shows early interest in reading and literature.
