ABSTRACT

As we pass into the midsummer of rg26, Professor Edwin Cannan completes twenty-nine years of continuous teaching at the London School of Economics and close on nineteen years' tenure of the Chair of Political Economy in London University. His retirement, under the age limit, from this Chair and from the regular teaching staff of the School is an important event. It ends an epoch and it breaks a rhythm. To those who have known our School longest and best, it must seem like the passing of an immemorial landmark from our horizon.
