ABSTRACT
Originally, the aims of the present study were three :
To make a comprehensive survey of every class of financial assistance, other than family income, available in England and Wales to young men entering the Colleges of Oxford and Cambridge for the first time ;
To ascertain the distribution of such assistance among boys of widely different educational and social origins ;
To investigate significant social circumstances associated with disparity in the allocation of scholarship awards among schools of different types.
