ABSTRACT

Considerable attention has recently been paid to the rapid decline in fertility of England and Wales. Since its continuance must eventually lead to a rapidly dwindling population, it is becoming imperative to ascertain what social agencies are associated with diminishing reproductive capacity. Foremost among social phenomena which may throw light on them are differences of fertility related to regions, occupations, and racial stocks. Unfortunately, information of this kind is somewhat difficult to obtain in this country because of the paucity of details recorded at the registration of births.
