ABSTRACT

The attitudes which were adopted towards people accused of being witches are reflected in a large part of the literature of witchcraft, with theories of the diabolical nature of the witches, but the feelings of the supposed witches themselves were less often considered though they must have been equally important. If the witch was a victim, voluntary or forced, that is worth consideration, and if he or she suffered much that also needs discussion. Two of the best explored fields of witchcraft are Europe and Africa, and it is instructive to note the similarities and differences of attitudes.
