ABSTRACT

Some time around 1920 a hoard of electrum trachea of John II Comnenus (1118–43) and his son Manuel I Comnenus (1143–80) was discovered in a ploughed field near Nicosia. It is believed that the hoard remained intact and comprised 117 specimens. The coins reached the London market six years ago, having remained in private hands since their discovery. Through the kindness and co-operation of Messrs. Spink and Son Ltd they were made available for study prior to dispersal.
