ABSTRACT
Between 1815 and 1875 British shipbuilding was completely refashioned. At the outset it was a craft, at the close it was a heavy engineering industry. This transition involved not only a new technology, but a major shift in the centre of production, a vast increase in scale, and fundamental changes in the operation and organisation of the firms.
