ABSTRACT

most of the archives mentioned below are preserved in the Scottish Record Office, H.M. General Register House, Edinburgh, which must be regarded as the main archive source in Scotland for the business historian. In the Register House there are lodged the national records of Scotland, administrative and legal, from earliest times to the present day; and, despite lamentable gaps in earlier series, (1) the public records do provide the continuity of material necessary for economic studies. But the Register House has now become more than a repository for the central public records, and the archive sources in the Scottish Record Office are fairly representative for the country as a whole.
