ABSTRACT

The New Forum is a place for new thinking, which is no more hostile to socialism here than it is in the Soviet Union. New Forum may one day be unnecessary now it is indispensable. We employ our democratic initiative to oppose all attempts to evade social dialogue through criminalization, exclusion, or intimidation. Socialism, which the government so sanctimoniously sees as being endangered, cannot be threatened by a popular movement. Citizens' initiatives do not threaten, but rather develop new social life. It is rather the inactivity of the Socialist Unity Party (SED) itself that is endangering socialism on German soil. We appeal expressly to the two million members of SED: you form the largest and most important political body in our country. The discussion that the SED itself must hold is an important part of the total societal discussion that our country needs. We call for an active and responsible stance from all citizens of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
