ABSTRACT

In differing ways, the two German states have not overcome their fascist pasts. The author generation quickly identified with the society which was being born, because during the 1940s we were forced to face our fascist past in an intense and drastic manner, more drastically than in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). Thus, there was constructed a strong tie with this society, founded by anti-fascists. This situation has lasted so long because we saw no alternatives. It seems to him impossible to want to live in the Federal Republic of Adenauer, Globke, and Lubke. Naturally, in the meantime, the Federal Republic changed, as well as his relationship with it and the people who live there. But, we continued to hope that here forces about to save a core of socialism would prove themselves and would find allies in pursuit of this goal. Now he is expressing himself very cautiously. In the first years, of course, he had greater hopes.
