ABSTRACT

The fact that Berliners and Germans in general, belong together manifests itself in a way that moves us and stirs us up. It is most poignant in the cases where separated families finally are unexpectedly and tearfully reunited. The German misery started with the terrorist Nazi regime and the war that was unleashed by it. That terrible war, that reduced Berlin, like so many other German and non-German cities, into mountains of rubble. Out of that war and out of the rupture between the victorious powers grew the division of Europe. It was also right for us to relieve and improve the external circumstances of the divided Germany and the people in it whenever the opportunity arose. To keep a clear head and to do the things, as best as possible, that is in accordance with our German interests as well as with our responsibilities towards Europe.
