ABSTRACT

This chapter offers the reader a view of the classroom that the camera could not see by panning the walls. The children in his classroom were born more than twenty years after the death of Malcolm X. In his classroom Malcolm X is not simply remembered in May on the anniversary of his birth, or as part of Black History Month. Last principal of our classroom community offers a natural bridge to the development of curriculum as well as the learning and teaching pedagogy of our classroom. In From Communication-to-Curriculum, Douglas Barnes describes a meaningful curriculum as one that has been acted upon by both students and teachers. Designing curriculum for diverse learners is an exercise in translation, integration and synchronization. Although the Algebra Project Transitional Curriculum is designed for middle school students, the pedagogy is equally relevant to younger students.
