ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Malcolm X as a cultural hero and provide guidelines for teaching Malcolm-related material at elementary, high school and university levels. Malcolm X was a man who sold and used drugs. He went to jail. One day, a brother came and introduced him to the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm X started to write to Elijah Muhammad, and he started to write back. This continued until Malcolm got out of jail. Writing to Elijah Muhammad made him know that he had a purpose in life and he wasn't supposed to throw his life away. He became so powerful that it frightened some people, and he was assassinated. The message is that we have a purpose in life so don't throw it away. Many young people are throwing their lives away with drugs, gangs and crime. Maybe they need help from someone like Malcolm X got from Elijah Muhammad to show them the way.
