ABSTRACT

Although the Native American Indian population comprises a relatively small percentage of the U.S. population, it constitutes almost half of the cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity within the total population (Hodgkinson, Outtz, & Obarakpor, 1990). Unfortunately, the latter point is not yet realized in many college and university communities, since Native American Indian students comprise less than 1 % of the total population of college students in the U.S. (Carter & Wilson, 1997). One-third to one-quarter of these students attend tribal community colleges (Gritts, 1997). Even though this percentage is higher than in the past, unfortunately, much of the intellectual talent within this population continues to be neglected. This neglect also includes the absence of culturally competent counseling and mental health care to Native American college students.
