ABSTRACT

At this point, we have little understanding of social and cultural influences on students’, and in particular boys’ experiences of single-sex schooling. Based on research in California's public single-gender Academies, this chapter provides a much-needed analysis of constructions of masculinity in single-sex schools. In a recent review of research on single-sex education, Mael finds a noticeable gap in the literature, namely, in the lack of attention to the experiences of boys, as “the overwhelming preponderance of research has focused on females and female concerns” (1998, p. 117).
