ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the development and impact of feminist theory within the field of digital technology, particularly in relation to the social use of and meanings surrounding the growth of the Internet. This aspect of contemporary visual culture has offered a rich new area of study for feminist historians, scientists, and sociologists alike, who have generated new categories for critical analysis and posed new questions about the nature of identity and visuality in a computer-dominated era. The figure of the cyborg and the term cyberfeminism have emerged as central to this new discourse; both have been interpreted, represented and appropriated in a number of different ways in academia and in mainstream media. The chapter examines the different visions/versions of cyberfeminism and their implications for the study of visual culture, and it will offer a visual analysis of some popular cyborg personae by way of a case study.
