ABSTRACT

The law that authorizes torture is a law that says:“Men, resist pain; and if nature has created in you an inextinguishable self-love, if it has granted you an inalienable right of self-defence, I create in you an altogether contrary sentiment: a heroic hatred of yourselves; and I command you to accuse yourselves, to speak the truth even while muscles are being lacerated and bones disjointed.” 2
