ABSTRACT

Athletes are constantly trying to improve their physiological capabilities. Many athletes feel that they need to build up their blood to optimise their physiological function. It has been found that 91% of all female elite athletes in the U.S.A. consume nutrient supplements (Clarke, 1990). Iron is a substance which is particularly abused by supplementing athletes. Iron supplements should only be reserved for those who have a documented anaemia caused by iron deficiency. In order observe the incidence of anaemia the 21 subjects who comprised the Irish Tennis Squad were evaluated.
