ABSTRACT

Athletic identity is the degree to which an individual identifies with the role of the sportsperson (Brewer, Van Raalte, & Linder, in press). Although high levels of athletic identity may signify a commitment to excellence in sport, there may be risks associated with a strong and exclusive identification of the self with the role of sportsperson (Brewer et al., in press). Research has shown that athletic identity is negatively correlated with adjustment to sport injury (Brewer, in press) and sport career termination (Hinitz, 1988).
