ABSTRACT

During a tennis match the exercise intensity may differ considerably according to the ability and the style of partners. Players regularly involved in competition, are often confronted with a strenuous match, generally of high exercise intensity, of long duration and often played in a hot environmental condition. Physiological responses during such matches have been studied in 23 women playing under standardized conditions (diet, ambient temperature, intensity, duration). The values obtained in 19 subjects have been previously published (Therminarias et al., 1991). Among the other women, 3 subjects stopped before the end of the match because of cramps and one because she felt the premonitory symptoms of heat stroke. The aim of the present study was to compare the biological values obtained in these four women to those obtained in the other players who were used as a control goup.
