ABSTRACT

Travel is nowadays a necessary part of the habitual activity of athletes. It may entail travel overseas for purposes of competition or travel across country for domestic contests. Besides, many athletes may not reside close to good quality training facilities and may regularly have to travel by car or public transport for the purpose of training. The stresses associated with habitual travelling have been studied in ‘commuters’ to work but little is known about the existence of ‘travel fatigue’ in athletes. It is likely that any detrimental effects are compounded by subjective feelings of tiredness associated with training and by boredom.
