ABSTRACT

Success in wheelchair sports is highly dependent upon the performance capacity of the athlete and the wheelchair. From an ergonomics research perspective three areas within the wheelchair-athlete combination are relevant in order to maximize performance capacity: (1) vehicle mechanics of the wheelchair, (2) work capacity and propulsion technique of the human engine, and (3) the wheelchair-user interface (Woude et al., 1994a). Apart from mere maximum performance, power production, speed and manoeuvrability are the prime wheelchair sports-related task aspects, which must be considered within the current framework. A special focus will be on the wheelchair-user interface paper.
