ABSTRACT

Everyone has heard of the courts. They are places used to decide disputes which people have with each other. Some people may know the names of the different courts and others may have some idea of the sort of cases dealt with in each court (Chapter 2). However, there are other ways of settling disputes. The aim of this chapter is to identify and explain the functions of the dispute-resolving agencies which we have in this country. You will learn that many disputes are adjudicated outside the court system. Discussion of the processes is included together with description of the legal aid system, without which many cases would not be able to be taken to court.
