ABSTRACT
The original terminus of the Great Eastern railway had been at Shoreditch, later renamed Bishopsgate, rather as parts of Paddington are known as Kensington. The name change, however, could not disguise the inconvenient location of the terminus, and the Great Eastern decided to extend the railway into the City of London.
