ABSTRACT

The railway heritage is typically studied with ‘railway’ and built ‘heritage’ as separate strands. This chapter introduces the key publications from both approaches, juxtaposing the work of railway historians and those devoted to architectural history and conservation. It also embraces writings on structures essential to the operation of trains – bridges, warehouses, workshops and engine sheds – that have suffered neglect through a preoccupation with the more fanciful architecture of Victorian stations.
