ABSTRACT
The growing appreciation of historic railway structures over the last 25 years or so has not been driven solely by their intrinsic architectural qualities. A key factor is their contribution to the landscape and townscape, which is where many would argue their main value – or otherwise – lies. It certainly represents one of the principal reasons for giving them statutory protection. Here are a few representative examples.
