ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular (CV) health may be conceived as a spectrum[1], at the left end of which is the unfit-obese child who has elevated risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Although these diseases ordinarily come to full flower in the adult years, the underlying processes seem to begin during childhood in that risk factors measured during childhood predict adult morbidity[2]. Consequently, high levels of these risk factors in childhood suggest that the child is low in CV health.
