ABSTRACT

Porosity of mortars and micro betons, as a factor influencing their frost resistance, has been investigated. Experiments have been conducted on a set of mortar mixtures obtained by blending cement components with two different kinds of flying ash. By applying the standard procedure (EN 196–1/92), mortars were made and their porosity was measured by applying the Mercury Porosimetry Method. Samples, whose porosity was determined, were exposed to the freezing and thawing cycles and their positions on a scale of durability were defined. For quantifying frost resistance of investigated mortars, a kind of frost resistance factor (analogous to Maage’s factor) has been introduced and adequate correlation between this factor and porosity is suggested.
