ABSTRACT

Recently, it has been said that deterioration of concrete structures occurs due to migration of ions, such as Cl or Na+, through concrete. In addition, some electric methods which control migration properties through concrete, like desalination or re-alkalization, are growing more and more important. However, electromigration mechanisms of ion through concrete is still unclear.

From this view point, the influence of various factors, such as current density, mix proportions, mineral admixtures, size and age of specimens, on electromigration properties of ions through mortar are experimentally studied.

From these investigations, the following conclusions were obtained;

Electromigration of ions is influenced by all factors (current density, mix proportion, mineral admixtures, thickness of specimens and age of specimens) which is considered in this study.

Resistivity against electromigration of ions increases when ground granulated blast-furnace slag was used in mortar.

Interfacial zone between paste and sand is very important on the view point of electromigration of ion through mortar.
