ABSTRACT

BRE is investigating the durability of geomembranes when used in contaminated land. One aspect of this work is to investigate changes in the physical and mechanical properties of membranes that have been chemically aged in an immersion test based on the US EPA 9090 method.

The physical and mechanical properties of geomembranes aged for 120/240 days in various chemical environments were measured. Samples of unaged and aged membranes were also examined using a Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyser (DMTA). The results for the DMTA tests were compared with the measured physical and mechanical properties of geomembranes.
