ABSTRACT

Fundamental gender equality existed in Vietnam's traditional society, reflecting the necessity of cooperation in the primitive commune and the spirit of humanism, mutual love and respect among the generations and between the sexes. The situation changes when the gender concept of Confucianism transferred to Vietnam during the ten centuries of Chinese occupation. The Vietnamese government seeks to ensure equality between men and women. The goal, the government has established laws that liberate women and enhance their social status. Gender equality promoted through the overhaul of Vietnam's legislative system, the law on gender relationships, the law on marriage and family, and through other legislation. Vietnam, 71.7 per cent of women is engaged as paid workers in the various economic sectors. The participation of women in production based the conditions of nature. The reproductive activities, women carry most of the burden in the household.
