The Function of Theatre in Society book
Theatre is frequently regarded as a mirror of the society that produces it in its different forms. The function of theatre, it is then held, is to awaken the spectators to the problems of life in society. In reaching the spectators, theatre can adopt two main channels: the intellect (mainly addressed by Brecht's alienation effect), or the emotions (Aristotle's catharsis). Any combination of the two is possible.
