ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a current collaborative project between China and Australia to improve long-term economic benefits of sheep raising in northern China by developing improved and sustainable technologies and facilitating their adoption by livestock producers. Wool industry discussions between China and Australia in the early 1980s identified the establishment of a sheep research station in China as an important step towards improving the Chinese wool industry while at the same time assisting communities with some of the lowest incomes in China. The design of the project recognises the need for advanced research facilities if the Academy is to be at the forefront of sheep and wool research in China, so extensive new laboratories were built and equipped with the most efficient equipment available. Training of Chinese staff in Australia on many aspects of the sheep industry is vital to the development of the Academy as a leading sheep and wool research and extension centre.
