ABSTRACT
Both Western scholars and politicians, and their Muslims counterparts are exploring the possibility of combining Islam with democracy and pluralism. The difficulty in exploring this possibility is that Islam is posited as essentially opposed to democracy and pluralism and, consequently, any scheme for human rights. However, Muslims have been convening conferences on the need to democratize and liberalize politics, society and thought. One might be surprised to know that the majority of fundamentalist theoreticians are now engaged in developing Islamic doctrines on democracy, pluralism and human rights.
