ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is to examine the main ways in which the role of Burmese literature in society changed and developed from the monarchical period to the colonial period and then through the post-independence period up till the present day. I have tried to examine not so much the nature of the literature itself but the purpose for which works were written and what people expected of a literary work.
