ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Japan's overall relations with the nations of South Asia. South Asia comprises those nations that are members of the South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC). These are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. Here, I shall broadly considers the relationship between Japan and the South Asian nations in the postwar period, with an emphasis on recent developments, especially since the end of the Cold War. The focus of my analysis will be on India, since it is the largest nation on the subcontinent, in terms of its population as well as its commercial, political, cultural and other ties with Japan.
