The Changing Asian Environment of China's Economic Development

The purpose of this paper is to examine the changing Asian environment of China’s economic development. I shall look at the balance between favourable and unfavourable structural trends and explore in particular the stability of China’s regional economic relationships to see how these relate to world systemic questions prompted by the Asian crisis. I focus particularly on the interplay between the Chinese and Japanese economies since I see this relationship as central to the issues considered here. ¹
