ABSTRACT

On the southern shores of the Mediterranean, young people represent today an important social category. They are the main actors in the renovation process which has been ongoing for a decade, with the change of generations that underlies the most striking and far-reaching social changes within Arab societies today. This generation grew up during the 1960s–70s when the State acted as a welfare state that served as the basis for development. It is now directly affected by the social crisis which derives from that model. It has to solve both the problem of its social integration and its present alienation crisis.
