ABSTRACT

Southeast Asia, is particularly interesting when viewed through the lens of globalization theory. While many theorists in the west see the distance between cultures shrinking (Giddens 1990; Tomlinson 1997) the sheer magnitude of the cultural diversity in southeast Asia sets it apart from other regions of the world. Certainly the diversity is greater than that of Europe, Latin America or the Middle East and thus this region offers an interesting contrast to some of the basic tenets of globalization theory.
