ABSTRACT

This chapter, through a literature review of some major studies on Indonesia's political economy, provides an overview of the state of research on Indonesian Chinese enterprise. For this review, we have made extensive use of the article by Dede Oetomo, entitled ‘The Ethnic Chinese in Indonesia,’ published in Leo Suryadinata's 1989 edited volume, The Ethnic Chinese in the Asean States: Bibliographical Essays . 1 This article by Oetomo, based on a review of publications from 1945 to 1986, provides a comprehensive picture of all aspects of the situation of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia. Oetomo's article includes a bibliography of about 520 entries, but we will only review those articles on the economic activities of ethnic Chinese. In addition, we have referred to a number of publications on the Chinese in Indonesia in the last decade, continuing where Oetomo left off in 1986. These publications include articles in newspapers and economic and business magazines. We have also undertaken a review of unpublished materials, such as theses, dissertations and seminar papers.
