ABSTRACT

Investment by Taiwanese companies in Southeast Asia has grown significantly since the late 1980s. From being a meager investor in Southeast Asia prior to 1986, Taiwanese firms have emerged as one of the largest investors in this region. Between 1959 to 1996, in terms of investment in approved projects, Taiwanese companies ranked second among the top ten foreign investors in Malaysia, second in Thailand, third in Philippines, seventh in Indonesia and the first in Vietnam (see Table 6.1) (Hsiao and Kung 1998).
