ABSTRACT

During the 1960s Sasaki-san and her family lived in rented housing of various sorts. In terms of the categories used in official statistics, she and her husband started off renting a privately owned and managed apartment with a communal kitchen and toilet; moved successively into two units of company (or “issued”) housing; into first one and then another privately owned and managed apartment with its own kitchen and toilet (plus a bath in the second “modern”); and finally into a privately owned and managed single-family house with five rooms, one of them a combined dining room-kitchen, or DK, plus a toilet, bath and small garden.
