ABSTRACT

There is a story, probably apocryphal, of an Army General who threatened that whenever he heard the word ‘culture’, he would reach for his gun. What this says for the General, or, indeed, what it says for his understanding of the concept of ‘culture’ is difficult to ascertain. The implication, however, would seem to suggest that military personnel have a streak of Philistinism in them and they are not sensitive to the more ‘refined’ things in life.
