ABSTRACT

Among the speakers of the language there is no single name for either the language or the people, although the unity of the language is recognized by all. Besides Ligbi (or Ligby) various groups of speakers and/or their language are referred to as Hwela (Huela, Wela), Gyogoh (or Dzogoh or Dioro) Numu (Noumou), Ton. For example, the latter two names are applied by the Muslim Ligbi speakers of Banda-Ahenkro and Manji to the non-Muslims (or nonMuslims until very recently) of Brawhani and Kwametintini. 'Gyogoh' is applied to the language of Manji and of Banda-Ahenkro, 'Ligbi' to the people. 'Hwela' refers to the language and also the people of Namasa.
