ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to review the teaching of history in secondary education in Spain during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and to assess the value assigned to history in the state curricula. 1 To centre on such a segment of the educational continuum may seem arbitrary, but the fact that secondary education has often included what we now term the upper primary years, and the lack of content diversification in most of the Spanish primary curriculum, justify the choice. Nevertheless, the study may seem partial and limited.
