ABSTRACT

The condition of many an African tribe of to-day is in all essentials the same as that through which the people themselves once passed in long-forgotten ages. Difficulties are made light of and anxieties borne in silence, while on every hand one sees examples of devotion to duty not the less heroic because unrecorded, and a gay-hearted courage which is beyond all praise. At the present time, Nigeria is fortunate in the presence of a woman whose goodness, charm and broad sympathies are gratefully acknowledged by all who have the privilege of meeting her. In conclusion, the author would venture to add that, to the great anthropologists at home and to those highly placed officials who have given encouragement so unstinted, as also to the one whose selflessness made possible the writing of this little record, she have no words in which to express her grateful thanks.
