ABSTRACT

The story of co-operation in Russia has been different, both in its history and in the final form which it has reached, from anything that has happened in any other country in the world. It is well known that the ownership of land in Russia has been in some sense communal throughout the whole of its history. From 1933 the organisation of communal agriculture has become fairly stable, and it may be said that the collective farm system of Russia is well understood by the peasants, and works with no more friction or trouble than is the case with the agricultural organisation of a more old-fashioned country. This result has, however, only been achieved by a very close cooperation between the State and the collective farms. The whole organisation is simple except so far as concerns the wages payable to the workers on the collective farm during the production of the crops.
