The Transformations in the Role of the State and their Impact on Higher Education - A Latin American Perspective on Research and Graduate Training

In this chapter, I shall attempt to balance the main problems that feature in Latin American societies today, and the challenges they pose, particularly for social scientists in the region. An analysis will be made of the changes that are taking place between the state and the social sciences in Latin America, which seem to point to a new role for the university as an institution, particularly concerning the function of research and postgraduate teaching.
