ABSTRACT

Thank you for the welcome. I am delighted to join you today and to open officially this first international conference on Defence and the Media in Time of Limited Conflict. I am not sure whether you have invited me because, as Governor-General, I hold the Command-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force; or whether, after 30 years of public life, I have managed to survive my share of battles with the media. Like the veterans of Agincourt, I can strip my sleeve and show my scars with the rest of them.
