ABSTRACT
Fifty years after Hiroshima – and the question whether the use of the atom bomb was justified is still being debated. The official view is that it saved many American lives by bringing the war to a quick end. But according to other views a Japanese offer to surrender was rejected because the United States was determined to demonstrate to the Soviets its newly acquired overwhelming military power.
